RAC wins International Safety Award with highest honours

11 APR 2023

The RAC has been awarded the highest possible accolade at the British Safety Council’s International Safety Awards, earning a Distinction in recognition of its commitment to excellent health, safety and wellbeing practices for its staff and members throughout 2022.

Now in their 65th year, the International Safety Awards recognise and celebrate organisations from around the world which have demonstrated to the satisfaction of the scheme’s independent judges their commitment to preventing workplace injuries and work-related ill health. Just one-in-seven organisations that won this year earned Distinctions at the awards, with the RAC the sole UK driving services company.

The RAC’s submission covered all areas of the business including risk identification, assessment to controls and governance frameworks and underlying policies. A number of its health and safety initiatives particularly impressed the judges, including its work to embed ‘golden safety rules’ among its roadside teams, its ‘Tough Enough to Care’ mental health first aiders scheme as well as its approach to training and monitoring via audits. The RAC’s work with Survive, the roadside industry safety partnership group, was also applauded.

British Safety Council chief executive Mike Robinson said: “The British Safety Council applauds the RAC on its achievement. The award is in recognition of the company’s commitment and hard work to keep their employees and workplaces free of injury and ill health.

“The vision of British Safety Council is that no-one should be injured or made ill through their work – anywhere in the world. Achieving this requires more than complying with legislation; it means people committed not only to health and safety but also more and more to workplace wellbeing and impelling others to follow suit.”

RAC chief executive Dave Hobday said: “Health, safety and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do at the RAC so I’m delighted the efforts we make on all these fronts have been recognised at these awards. To be one of a tiny number of UK businesses – and the sole UK driving services company – to be awarded a Distinction is testament to the tireless work of our teams across the UK, whether they’re working helping our members at the roadside or in a crucial support function based at one of our three offices.”
